What are Program Grants?
Program grants are awarded to assist with program expenses such as tennis equipment, instructors, court time, publicity, and any associated costs deemed appropriate. Court resurfacing or maintenance will not be covered.
The following are examples of programs that have been funded:
- Instructional series and leagues for junior players which introduce new players to the sport of tennis.
- Elementary and secondary schools that participate in USTA School Tennis and wish to implement further programming such as after school, summer and intramural tennis programs.
Special Community Needs Funding* may be available for needs such as:
- USTA chartered community tennis association development expenses including: incorporation fees, administrative and clerical expenses, rental of facilities and costs of equipment.
- Community tennis programs for adaptive populations, including wheelchair tennis and Special Olympics.
*Beginning in 2018, USTA Colorado’s community funding model has changed and program grant applications are no longer utilized. Contact Community Development for more information.

When do I apply for a Program Grant?
Program grants are reviewed on an annual basis with a primary application deadline of March 1 for summer and fall programs. Funding for winter and spring programs will be considered for a September 1 deadline.
What are the criteria for a Program Grant?
Financial support will be awarded to organizations that focus on building and expanding local community tennis opportunities and resources. Awards will be given based on financial need. Grants typically range from $100-$1,000.
Applying organizations must be open to all people, regardless of race, creed, religious belief and nationality. Applications by individuals will not be accepted.
Priority will be given to those programs which promote and develop the growth of tennis, target new players and link their program(s) to USTA Colorado initiatives.
How do I apply for a Program Grant?
Fully complete the grant application and submit via email or mail by March 1 or September 1.
May I apply for more than one Program Grant?
Yes. However, you must fill out a separate application for each grant.
May I apply for a Program Grant every year?
The purpose of a program grant is to provide initial assistance to start or expand a program. It is awarded for a period of one year, with the option to extend the support. Grant applicants are encouraged to become self-sufficient. Click here for more information on the committee guidelines for repeat applicants.
When do I find out if I received a Program Grant?
All applicants will receive a letter detailing the funding decisions by April 1 (October 1 for second round funding).
If I receive Program Grant money, what is expected of my organization?
A grant accountability form must be submitted upon the completion of the program, including an itemized record of expenditures. The report explains how the grant money was used, and includes receipts, all publicity and photos illustrating how the grant helped your community. Recognition of USTA Colorado or the Colorado Youth Tennis Foundation as a supporter of the program is also required.
Is my organization required to have a 501(c)3 tax status?
No, however, the program or project for which you are soliciting funds must be nonprofit in nature. In other words, the budget you propose should not have excess funds left over.
Does my organization need to be a USTA member?
Yes, your organization must be a USTA organizational member to receive funding. If your organization is not a current member, the annual USTA membership fee will be taken out of the amount awarded.
What else is available to assist my organization?
USTA produces a wide range of materials to help support your program including curriculum guides, videos on how to teach, marketing and promotion tips, how to start a community tennis association, fundraising and more. Many of these materials are available free of charge.
There are other limited USTA grant, scholarship and award opportunities that are available for specific individuals, such as college educational scholarships and scholarships to attend national workshops and events, as well as for programs, including USTA program promotion and expansions and resurfacing or court improvements.
